Top 10 Weird Movies, Runners Up
Honorable Mentions
El Topo (1970)
Jodorowsky’s completely bizarre “western” that may have started the whole “Midnight Movie” trend. See the naked young Franciscans whipped with cactus. See the bandit leader disemboweled. See the priest ride into the sunset with a midget and her newborn baby. What it all means isn’t exactly clear, but you won’t forget it.
The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies (1964)
Ray Dennis Steckler’s very weird horror-musical. The name ain’t the only odd thing about it. Read a review here.
Videodrome (1983)
One of the greatest movies David Cronenberg has ever done. Long live the new flesh! Reviewed here.
Lost Highway (1997)
One of Lynch’s best movies and a particular favorite of ours. Watch Bill Pullman go on death row for killing his cheatin’ wife (a hot Patricia Arquette). Watch him transform into punk kid, who deals with mob boss (Robert Loggia). The best performance is a total freakout from Robert Blake. He’s ultra creepy and does this great bit with Pullman (“I’m in your house. As a matter of fact, I’m there right now. Call me!”)
Mulholland Drive (2001)
A good Lynch film. We prefer Lost Highway but there’s plenty of weirdness here.
Barton Fink (1991)
Awesome flick by the Coen Brothers. Takes place in the 40s. Kind of a part-Shining, part metaphysical trip through the head of a writer. John Goodman is fantastic. Reviewed here.
Naked Lunch (1991)
Cronenberg is back with his take on William Burrows. Awesome stuff, and totally strange. Reviewed here.
The Thing with Two Heads (1972)
They transplanted a white bigot’s head on a soul brother’s body! Wackiness ensues! Glossolalia Black vouches for this one.
House aka Hausu (1977)
No, this ain’t the TV show on Fox and it’s not the William Katt horror/comedy from 1986. This is the 1977 Japanese piece of weirdness from Nobuhiko Obayashi, who had cut his teeth on commercials before delivering this really bizarre supernatural thriller for film company Toho. Crazy cats, a girl eaten by a piano, psychedelic visuals, nudity, animation, girls named after their stock-character archetypes, etc. Completely surreal and insane.
