Know Your Dosha
Ayurveda believes that everything in the whole universe is interconnected. It also considers the five elements (space, air, fire, water, earth) that constitute all matters, from people to paper.
There are three doshas or mind-body types that form from a mixture of elements. They are:
- Vata means air and space
- Pitta is fire and water
- Kapha is composed of earth and water
As per Ayurveda, these are the only mind-body types. Ayurvedic practices teach that each living being has a unique balance of elements that is called Prakruti or constitution. Often, it is disturbed by external factors like diet, pollution, stress, season, collectively termed as Vikruti.
By knowing your dosha, you will learn what your skin type is and what products to use. To achieve the perfect skin, you may practice the ayurvedic skin care to re-harmonize nature and Prakruti.
Skin Types According to Ayurveda
Every person has a different skin type. Ayurvedic medicine classifies them according to your skin makeup and quality.
Vatas have dry skin. People with this skin type tend to have rough, thin skin. Out of the three, this one is prone to aging. Still, proper hydration can easily fix this.
To maintain a young, glowing Vata skin, incorporate the following into your lifestyle:
- Drink lots of water daily. If you can, try to make it to at least two liters per day.
- Apply warm oil to your bodies such as sesame, almond, and avocado every day.
- Eat lots of healthy fats derived from vegetables or legumes.
To have a Pitta skin means having sensitive skin. Most people with this skin type have reddish skin, which is often the result of inflammation, acne, and eczema. The best solution to balance a Pitta skin is to use cooling and soothing products.
Ayurvedic skincare recommends the following for a youthful Pitta skin:
- Coconut, coco water, coco oil for digestive intake, or topical application.
- Avoid too much exposure to the sun
- Avoid consuming alcohol, caffeine, spicy, and oily food.
Kaphas have oily skin, which is also susceptible to acquiring cystic acne or a severe type of acne that blocks pores. The blockage caused due to accumulated dirt and pollution. Often, it results in infection and inflammation.
Avoid Kapha skin problems by:
- Doing regular detoxification
- Exfoliating weekly with clay and mud masks
- Eating plenty of organic fruit and vegetables
