The Elements of a Perfect Mascara

posted by Chris Valentine

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to their eyelashes. Some prefer their lashes that are lengthened and defined, while others prefer their lashes to be curled and voluminous. Some want a balance of both.

To get that specific look you are going for, you need to identify the perfect mascara — which can seem impossible to do, considering all the options available.

Regardless, decide the aesthetics you are going for so you can better gage what mascara is perfect for you. Consider the different elements that go into choosing your “perfect” mascara.

The Brush

Mascara is all about the brush, as the shape and size of bristles will define the look your lashes take on.

Take, for example, the brush for the IT Cosmetics Lash Blowout Mascara; this brush is specifically designed based on technology for barrel brushes. This allowed the brand to creative a mascara that will separate, lift, and structure the volume of your lashes.

Consider the look you are going for, so you can better gauge the perfect product for you. If you’re going for a fluttery look with thicker lashes, you’ll want to look for a brush with dense and thick bristles. Find the right brush for your lashes and desired look.

The Handle

A stiff, uncomfortable handle will just make applying your mascara annoying. Your mascara wand should be sturdy, comfortable, and provide control so that you can apply it as you intend.

The Colour

Everyone has different colour preferences for their eyelashes, which is why you want to identify the product that gives off the right colour for you. Find a product that gives an intense colour payoff; look for mascaras made with transparent polymers that can intensify the saturation of pigment you’re aiming for.

The Lift

Consider the lifting capabilities of your product – some may want their lashes more lifted than others, but it’s important to find a mascara with solid lifting capabilities.

The Lasting Time

No one wants a mascara that will fade or flake off after a couple hours of wear. The perfect product will be able to last you all day.

The Water Resistance

Is it waterproof or not? This is an important question to ask yourself, and the answer will be different for everyone. Waterproof may seem like the easy answer, but if you are acne prone, consider a product that isn’t waterproof and won’t require an oil-packed makeup remover.

The Flaking

Flaking either means your product is too old or is the wrong formula. Project Runway’s Billy B. shared with Fashionista that “[Flaking] tends to happen when you over-apply a thin formula mascara trying to build volume, rather than using a smaller amount of a volume-building formula.”

Your mascara shouldn’t flake – end of story. If the product you’ve been using does, then it’s not the right one for you. No one deserves flakey eyelashes.

The Look

At the end of the day, there is no one perfect universal mascara – everyone’s “perfect” is different. When determining which product to wear, decide what look you are going for. The reality is, you will probably want a couple different go-to products to choose from.
