The Curtain Call – When is it Time to Switch Out Your Window Dressings?

posted by Chris Valentine

It’s always fun to decorate your home. Whether you own or rent, you want to feel like the place you live in is a safe, secure and warm space where you can relax, either by yourself or in the company of your friends and family. A bland house with no colour, art or decoration is not enjoyable to live in unless you’re going for an ultra-minimal vibe. Yet keeping a particular aesthetic for too long can be just as boring. Today, we’re going to discuss the curtain call and learn when is the right time to switch out your window dressings.

Wear and Tear

The first time when you should replace your curtains is when they become old and worn out. They are fabric after all and will fade after exposure to sunlight. They can also get moth-eaten, rip, tear or even get used as a scratching post by your car. When your curtains seem old, tired, ripped or worn out this is a great time to replace them.

When it is Time for a Change

Some people love change and find it refreshing, like a cool gust of wind on a hot summer’s day. If you’re like this you’re probably rearranging and redecorating every few years. If this is the case for you then you should change your window dressings when you next feel the whim. You may want to change colours, replace curtains with blinds or vice versa. If you’re on a budget you can even make them yourself – there are a million different fabrics and colours to choose from at your local fabric store.

During Renovations

Home renovations are a great time to change everything you can about a property. There’s a high chance that your old curtains or blinds won’t match your new paint scheme or the size of your new windows. So, at the same time that you’re planning how your renovated home will look, think about your window dressings too.

Blind Slats Aren’t Closing

You may have blinds in some rooms of your home. Often folks have blinds in their bathrooms and laundries. Over time, the slats can become loose and worn out and not close properly. This means that they don’t block out light effectively which is annoying. If your blinds are tired and the slats aren’t closing then it may be time to go shopping for a replacement.

Blind or Curtain Cords Can be a Hazard

Did you know that blinds or curtains with long, unsecured cords are a major strangulation hazard for young children? Sometimes they can think they’re a toy, and it is very easy for these cords to get wrapped around their throat. Now, this is a scary thought for any parent or person who has children in their home regularly. So if you have blinds or curtains like this it’s a great idea to upgrade to a safer choice.

They’re No Longer Stylish

Interior design and decoration styles ebb and flow, and one day you may find that your window dressings aren’t in fashion any more. If you like to keep your home up to date, this may be reason enough to begin the task of updating your window dressings.

A Curtain Conclusion

There are a few signs that it is time to replace your window dressings. Wear, tear, rips and frays are a sure sign, as is when you simply feel like a change. Renovations are another life stage when it is a great time to update your curtains and blinds. If your blind slats are not shutting correctly anymore you may wish to replace your blinds, and remember that long and loose blind or curtain cords are a major hazard for young children. And finally, sometimes window dressings plain fall out of style, which may mean it is time to shop for an upgrade.
