Setting Up a Pallet Rack

posted by Chris Valentine

In warehouse management, there are different types of pallet racking system that you can use to organize your inventory. These systems include the selective pallet racking, push-back pallet racking, and pallet flow racking system.

If you have finally chosen a racking system, the next step is to know how to install and assemble them. When installing pallet racks, there are specific guidelines that you need to follow so your shelving units remain sturdy, and your products are not at risk. Here are steps to follow in setting up a pallet rack.

Secure all materials and information

Before putting anything together, make sure that you have all the necessary knowledge and equipment to assemble a pallet rack. The following should be present before you start putting things together.

Pallet measurement

One of the most critical steps in setting up a pallet rack is knowing the proper measurement of your pallet. The height and width of the pallet must directly coincide with the orientation of your pallet rack. So, make sure that you have this information first before proceeding to buy or install a pallet rack.

Chalk marks and level

Chalk marks are essential so that you can pinpoint where the edge of the pallet rack should go. They should be able to outline the base of the rack. Also, leveling is vital so that you can secure that the beams are flat and even.

Pallet Rack Beams

The pallet rack beams are composed of uprights, which determine the height of the racks, and the beams or bays, which establish the width. Make sure that the horizontal beams are marked according to their intended level.

Lifting Equipment

Pallet racks are quite heavy, which is why you must have people or equipment that can help you with the installation, such as a forklift or a pallet jack.

Basic installation guideline

Now that you have secured all the necessary materials and information, you can now proceed with the installation of the pallet rack. While different frames have particular instructions on how they should be assembled, here is a general overview of how it should be done.

Start from the bottom

To make things easier, start by attaching the lowest beam to the upright. By doing this, the base is secured first, and you can quickly work your way up without worrying about the rack collapsing.

Make sure that they are leveled

To make sure that the racks will not slope downward, check the level and make sure that they are at a perfect 90° angle.

Install the wire deck

To finish the installation, once all the beams are in position, place the wire decking. Most of the time, there are at least four decks for every level; however, it will still depend on your pallet size.

Safety checks

Lastly, before you can use your racks, make sure that you do a safety check. You can use the level to check whether all the beams are perfectly even to avoid products from falling. Check on the bolts and anchors of the uprights to prevent any mishaps from happening.

Once all of these are completed, you can finally use the racks for your warehouse. Additionally, you can also opt to have a professional do the installation so that you can have the assurance that all your products will be safe.
