1. Registered Nurse
If you’re looking for a job where you can save lives, you should consider becoming a registered nurse. As a nurse, you have several options on where to work. Your options include, but aren’t limited to:
- hospitals
- schools
- nursing homes
- physicians offices
You also have the ability to travel around the country as a travel nurse.
In order to become a registered nurse, you need either an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in nursing. The nursing field is becoming extremely competitive, therefore it’s ideal to have a bachelor’s degree.
2. Firefighter
Becoming a firefighter is a rewarding career choice. Some basic requirements to become a firefighter include:
- minimum age of 18 and maximum age between 28 and 35 to start out in the field
- good physical shape
- high school diploma or equivalent
Since the field of firefighting is also competitive, it would be in your best interest to have a fire science and become an EMT.
You can expect to take a drug test and physical aptitude exam. There will also be a written test, oral interview, and background check.
3. Police Officer
When you think of life-saving jobs, police officers are at the top of the list. As a police officer, you will be responsible for protecting the people and property of your community.
Becoming a police offer involves several steps. Several background checks may be necessary. This includes your financial standing as well. The police department will dig deep into your history to make sure you’re the right candidate for the position.
Requirements vary by state, but generally, you will need either a degree in criminal justice or complete police academy training. You will also need to pass the POST exam and a psychological evaluation.
4. Paramedic
A paramedic is someone who’s trained to provide emergency medical care to an individual to keep them stable until they arrive at the hospital. Paramedics mainly work in ambulances.
In order to become a paramedic, you must first become an EMT. It’s ideal to work as an EMT for at least a year to get the experience necessary to become a paramedic. Before becoming a paramedic, you’ll need to take prep courses and then enter a reputable paramedic program.
5. Lifeguard
Lifeguard careers can be incredibly rewarding. In order to have this lifesaving position, you must participate in lifeguard training. Some of the prerequisites of this training include:
- you must be at least 15 years of age
- pass a pre-course swimming skills test
The lifeguard certification process generally takes 25 hours to complete. You’ll be required to attend all classes and pass both written and skills tests. You will need at least 80% in order to pass.
