According to TorHoerman Law, this heightened risk has prompted legal action.

Drugwatch states that there are 389 NEC lawsuits pending in multidistrict litigation in the Northern District of Illinois as of February 2024. These lawsuits involve several Similac and Enfamil cow’s milk-based baby formulas and their manufacturers Mead Johnson and Abbott Laboratories. Parents who have filed a Similac or Enfamil lawsuit express concerns about the alleged failure of manufacturers to provide adequate warnings regarding NEC.

While formulas are available as a nutritional option, healthcare providers emphasize the unparalleled benefits of mother’s milk. Breastfeeding provides essential antibodies and nutrients tailored to a premature infant’s unique needs while establishing an emotional bond between the infant and the mother.  

Other alternatives include specialized formulas designed for premature infants, such as those fortified with additional nutrients to support their development. Human milk banks also offer an alternative, providing screened and pasteurized donor breast milk as a safe and nutritious option.

Reducing Respiratory Risks

Premature infants often face respiratory challenges due to underdeveloped lungs. Respiratory support measures, including mechanical ventilation or the use of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), aim to reduce the risk of respiratory complications.  

As per a report by NIH, CPAP has been shown to be relatively effective and safe in preventing and treating respiratory distress among premature infants.

These interventions are carefully tailored to each infant’s respiratory status, promoting adequate oxygenation and supporting lung development. Continuous monitoring and adjustments ensure the effectiveness of these measures in mitigating respiratory risks.
