The 3 Different Types of CBD Oil (And How to Choose the Right One for You)

posted by Chris Valentine

CBD is a $1 billion industry in the U.S.

You may have noticed this miracle “cure-all” trending with people from all walks of life.

While it’s relatively new, CBD does seem to be promising. Considering it has all the health benefits of THC but without the psychoactive effects (the “high”), it’s no wonder CBD has exploded in popularity.

For people living with pain and inflammation, many have turned away from pharmaceutical drugs with adverse side effects and picked up CBD oil instead. Perhaps you’re looking into this yourself.

If you’re confused about CBD oil types, don’t worry. We’ll explain them in detail below so you know which one you should choose. We’ll also tell you about the different delivery methods.

1. Raw

This is CBD oil in its purest form since as the name suggests, all it’s been through is extraction—no filtering or any other processes.

Some people prefer to get raw CBD oil because it doesn’t just contain CBD. Since it hasn’t been filtered, it contains other things such as chlorophyll, terpenes, and other things that come from hemp plants.

When you get other substances in your CBD oil, especially terpenes, this can result in the entourage effect. This means you get an overarching beneficial effect from all these compounds working together.

However, do note that this means there is a small amount of THC in the product, which may cause you to fail drug tests if your work requires them.

2. Decarboxylated

Decarboxylated CBD oil has gone through the process where its strength and/or effectiveness is increased.

This type of CBD oil is great if you need a quick way to reap the benefits of it.

Because of this, you’ll see decarboxylated CBD oil used in edibles.

3. Filtered

Filtered CBD oil will have the highest concentration of CBD available.

Not only is it filtered, but it’s decarboxylated as well. This means out of all 3 types, filtered CBD oil is the most expensive since it has to go through so many processes.

Because it’s filtered, you won’t find any other compounds in it—just CBD. As a result, you won’t get the entourage effect.

However, this means there’s very little to no THC in it. So if you need to pass drug tests, this may be the CBD oil for you.

The Different Delivery Methods

Not only are there different types of CBD oils, but there are also various ways you can take it.

Below are some of the most common methods you’ll find.

Vape Oil

If you’re looking for quick relief, vaping can be a great delivery method.

You just load up the best CBD vape oil into your vape pen and then inhale.

You’ll get quick-acting results that may be potent, depending on the strength of CBD oil you’re using. However, these effects wear off pretty fast, so you’ll need to keep vaping if you want to continue feeling the benefits.

Capsules or Gummies

Both capsules and gummies already have preset dosages in each.

While this is more convenient than measuring out your own CBD oil, it may be harder to adjust your dosages since you can’t really cut a capsule in half or even into tenths.

For either, you just take as needed. Since you’re basically eating the capsules or gummies, these methods take the longest to take effect.

While it may take over an hour for you to feel the benefits, capsules and gummies also provide the longest-lasting effects. Results can last up to 12 hours, depending on your dosage.

Tinctures

In tinctures, your CBD oil will come in a glass bottle with a dropper.

You can choose to take tinctures in one of two ways.

The first method is by putting a few drops in either your food or drink. Then, you either eat or drink as normal. Since you have to digest it, it may take a little bit for the effects to take hold.

The other method is placing drops underneath your tongue (sublingual delivery). You’ll hold the drops there for around 1 minute, then swallow. You should then feel the effects in about 15 minutes.

With tinctures, effects can last for hours, so it’s good for long-term relief.

Topicals

CBD topicals can come in salves or creams.

They’re best for aches and pains, or headaches and migraines. All you have to do is rub the salve or cream directly onto the desired site, such as your temples.

Topicals have a very quick delivery time, which is great for pain that you need to address immediately. But it also wears off just as quickly. You may have to reapply and massage multiple times to get the optimal effects.

Know Which CBD Oil Types Are Best for You

Now you know the 3 CBD oil types, as well as the main delivery methods out there.

Depending on what you want to take CBD oil for, some methods may work better than others.

The important thing is to start out slow and experiment with the different oil types and methods until you find the right one for you. Seeing as everyone has their own unique body chemistry, what may work for your friend may not necessarily work for you.

What’s great about CBD oil is you can’t overdose and the most you’ll feel from taking too high of a dosage is maybe some nausea, fatigue, and maybe diarrhea.

So get to experimenting and find the right dose to get relief from your ailments!
