How to Get Your Kids Ready for Camp

posted by Chris Valentine

For many, August is the last bit of summer. Kids that start school in September have just a little time left to milk it for what it’s worth and squeeze in more fun before the school bell rings again. While kids are no doubt excited to go off to camp, parents are also rejoicing too. Camp gives parents some much-needed peace and quiet while their kids gain exciting new experiences.

When it comes to camps out in the wilderness, it’s important to get your kids ready for camp. Here are some suggestions to help them gain the most from camp.

Stock up on non-perishables

While the camp will surely provide food, having fun non-perishable snacks to share with fellow campers will make the experience even more fun.

Give them instant shelter with instant tents

Instant tents are amazing. They are lightweight so they’re easy to carry. Plus, best instant tents open up in, well, an instant. They’re waterproof and durable too so you can let your child camp with confidence knowing they’re safe and dry from the elements no matter how wet and wild the weather gets.

A place to lay their heads

In these days there are many sleeping bags that you can choose for your child. Along with that instant tent, make sure you get a quality sleeping bag. One that keeps your child warm when it’s cool out and is breathable in hotter weather is ideal for enduring any of the elements. You should also include a pillow, though the more compact it is, the less cumbersome it will be for traveling. Consider ones that inflate so they can be folded up when camp is over for easy portability.

Let there be light

Even in faux camping settings at camps, it gets dark at night. A good LED lantern, headlamp or flashlight will make it easy to see all around, or read or play games once the sun has gone down.

Don’t forget about safety

While camp counselors will always be trained in first aid and keep first aid items on hand, it’s never a bad idea to pack a personal first aid kit for your child. Especially if your child has prescription medications they must take, you should include it in the first aid kit. Additionally, over-the-counter remedies for common ailments as well as bandages and ointments should be included.

Choose the right apparel

Camp is not about being fashionable. It’s about being prepared and being comfortable. That being said, flip flops are a terrible idea for camping. Have your child pack rubber or waterproof boots along with waterproof socks. Keep feet dry during hikes is imperative or else they’ll get blisters. And blisters are dreadful when you have to do a lot of walking.

Hygienic items

Simple ways to keep up with one’s hygiene should definitely be included. Environmentally safe soaps, shampoos, and conditioners are all good choices. Don’t forget toothpaste a toothbrush too!

Don’t let the bugs bite

In the summer, don’t forget how vicious, not to mention annoying, the bugs can be. Include insect repellent as well as bug bite relief to help soothe away itchy bites. Plus, toothpaste makes a good treatment for bug bites as well. Let your child know if they run out of itch relief, they can dab a little toothpaste on the bite and feel better in no time!
