How to Find the Right DUI Lawyer for Your Case

posted by Chris Valentine

Driving under the influence (DUI) is one of the most common offenses in the US. Reports from the US Department of Transportation show that over 1.28 million arrests were made for DUI in 2012. This number has steadily increased over the years.

While the number of DUI arrests may seem surprising, the number of deaths resulting from accidents involving drivers under the influence is even more shocking. The figures released by the Department of Transport in the same report showed that 33,561 people died from injuries in DUI accidents. Over 2 million people were injured in DUI accidents the same year. Highway crashes involving drivers under the influence cost the country over $37 billion. DUI certainly is a serious offense.

The costs of DUI

A DUI charge can have a serious impact on your life. It can result in your driving privileges being revoked. It can also result in a loss of income or potential income as a result of your criminal record. You may even have to serve some jail time.

Get an attorney

Your best chance at avoiding a conviction is to find an experienced DUI attorney.

  • List potential attorneys

Begin by making a list of potential attorneys. This can include attorneys you’ve been referred to or have heard about as well as those whose websites you’ve come across. You may also want to consider an attorney you’ve used for other matters, who may have some experience in criminal law.

  • Narrow down your list by qualification

Consider the qualifications of each attorney on your list. Check their educational background, the state in which they practice and their license. Check to ensure that they are accredited by the American Bar Association. They should also have experience in successfully defending DUI cases.

It’s also a good idea to see what others have to say about the attorneys. Check reviews to see what previous clients have to say.

  • Arrange for an in-person consultation meeting

When you’ve narrowed down your list to at least three lawyers, contact them directly for a meeting. This will give you a chance to ask questions and judge just how compatible you and the attorney are. Be sure to bring all the documents related to your case and present the lawyer with the facts of the case. Listen to what they have to say.

You should also take this opportunity to ask the lawyer some questions about their experience and their case load. You will want to choose a lawyer that has experience and the time to handle your case properly.

  • Compare attorney fees

Having visited all attorneys you’re considering, you can now compare their fees. Don’t go for the lowest or highest rate at once. Consider other factors such as experience, compatibility and strategy. You should choose the lawyer that you feel will help you get a good outcome.

Ensure that all charges have been included in the prices you’re comparing. Don’t consider any lawyer who isn’t open about their charges.  For more information visit Sohovich Law in San Diego.

Communication is key, and the great thing about consultations is that it helps you see how well you can communicate and see if you are a good match. Great tips for finding a lawyer, thanks for sharing!

These are some great tips, and I appreciate your advice to have in-person consultations with at least three lawyers when looking for a defense attorney. I got a DUI, and I want to make sure that this goes as well as possible, so I want to find a good attorney. I’ll definitely make sure to meet with several in-person so I can ask questions and get a feel for how they work. Thanks for the great post!

My little brother is in the process of looking for a DUI lawyer, so I will have to show him this information. I like the idea you gave of listing potential attorneys and narrowing it down based off of qualifications. I imagine that it would also be a good idea for him to look online at reviews and/or testimonials of potential companies to see which ones other people have been happy with.

I am in the process of trying to help my brother find an attorney for his case. I like your advice to make a list of all of the referrals we have heard about or found on the internet. We will make a list together and then narrow down the best options from there. I know that finding a good lawyer in this situation is so important for him as well as the rest of our family.

I really like your advice to arrange for in-person interviews. There are a lot of people don’t recognize the kind of difference that simply sitting a few minutes with a potential attorney can make. However, it really does make a big difference if you actually get to the person representing you beforehand. Do you have any other tips when it comes to hiring an attorney?

Even if it seems that conviction is unavoidable, a good attorney can work to protect you so that everything is fair. You don’t want to serve more time than what is just. It is useful to have somebody who is experienced in protecting people in this situation.

I really love how you talked about making a list of all the options you have and then listed the ways to narrow down your options. This method is really effective for finding a DUI attorney because you get to see what choices you have and then narrow down those options based on things you want or need from your attorney. The last part of the process can be the hardest because, like you said, you can’t always pick a lawyer based off their cost. My older brother is on the last step of this process, and he is having a hard time judging which of his potential lawyers gives him the kind of value for his money that he needs.

I agree that your best chance of avoiding conviction of a DUI is to hire an experienced DUI attorney. You also mention that you should make a list of potential attorneys, including ones that have been referred to you. I think it’s a good idea to choose a DUI attorney that is willing to give you a free first consultation.

I like how you suggested considering each potential DUI attorney’s qualifications to help you narrow down your list. I got a DUI, and I want to fight this so I don’t have this stuck on my record, so I want to hire an attorney so I have better chances of success. I have a few potentials ones in mind, so maybe it would be a good idea to look at each of their qualifications to make it easier to make a decision.

Thank you for sharing this important information about finding the right DUI attorney for your needs. I especially appreciate your mention of finding an experienced attorney. This is so important to getting the best legal defense. In addition, it is important to make sure that the legal staff aiding your attorney are friendly and knowledgeable, that communication is up to par, and that the required attorney’s fees are reasonable. In the case of a DUI, having an attorney is a valuable thing, but only if he is the best one suited for your case. Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks for going over some things to do in order to get a dui lawyer. I’m glad that you mentioned to ask any questions you may have to them in the initial consultation meeting, like what their experience is like. If I was in this situation, I know I would want to know if they have handled cases like this before. Plus, it could be a great chance to learn more about what their history is like and how often they handle cases like these.
