Living With Asthma: Your Guide to Living a Healthy Life

Approximately 19.2 million adults in the U.S. have to live with asthma. This disease causes the tiny airways going to the lungs to tighten when exposed to certain triggers.

While there are many types of prescription medications and inhalers to help treat the symptoms of asthma, there’s no cure. This means people living with asthma must take extra measures to lead a healthy life.

If you suffer from asthma and want to learn how to manage the disease, keep reading. We’re going over some helpful tips.

    The Right Diet

It may come as a surprise, but eating a healthy diet can help decrease the severity of asthma. However, you need to incorporate the right kinds of foods into your diet.

Increasing your intake of foods that contain antioxidants is a good idea. As a rule, try to get several servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Blueberries, kale, apples, and artichokes are all great.

Drinking a little black tea or coffee each day can help reduce symptoms. Caffeine has the ability to open your airways.

    Regular Excercise

There’s a common misconception that asthma sufferers shouldn’t engage in physical activity. In very severe cases this is true. However, most people with asthma can benefit from regular exercise.

Cardiovascular workouts help strength respiratory muscles. Biking, hiking, and swimming are all perfect exercises to work into your routine.

If you’re not used to getting exercise, start slow. You’ll soon build up your stamina as your cardiovascular muscles get stronger.

    Stay On Top of Medications

If you take medications for asthma, it’s important to research how they work. Make sure you understand all the potential side-effects.

Try to take your asthma medication at the same time each day. If you’re prone to forgetting to take your medication, get a seven-day pill dispenser.

If you tend to have unexpected attacks, always have a backup inhaler on hand. Talk to your doctor about severe asthma treatments if you feel your attacks are getting worse.

    Manage Your Indoor Environment

Many common asthma triggers can make their way into your home. However, there are things you can do to reduce their presence.

Mop and vacuum your floors once a week. Remember to vacuum the furniture and curtains, as these are both breeding grounds for dust mites and allergens.

Changing the air filter in your AC unit once a month is imperative. This will ensure healthy air quality in your home, which will reduce your symptoms.

    Protect Yourself From Illness

People with asthma have a hard time with illnesses like the flu or common cold. It’s important to take measures to prevent catching these viruses.

Make it a point to get the flu shot at the beginning of the flu season. It’s also important to wash your hands regularly. You can even wear a mask when in populated areas.

Finally, keep your immune system in good shape. You can do this by getting enough rest, eating well, and minimizing alcohol consumption.

    Make Living With Asthma Easy

Just because you have asthma doesn’t mean you can’t do everything people without the disease can do. It’s all a matter of taking care of yourself.

Use the tips above and make living with asthma a breeze.
