5 Ways to Prevent Mold Growth in Your Home

As a homeowner, mold can be a nightmare. Not only is it unsightly, but it can also cause diseases and trigger allergic reactions in people who are hypersensitive to spores. For this reason, prevention is always better than to wait and have your mold problem become severe. It also saves you time and effort, since mold stains are difficult to clean. Here’s how you can prevent mold from taking root in your home.

    1. Get a dehumidifier

Mold thrives in wet and humid areas. In fact, it is known to thrive in places where the humidity level is above 60%. Controlling the amount of moisture in your home is the most effective way to prevent a mold problem, and you can do so using a dehumidifier. Just be sure to clean it every once in a while, since they’re also vulnerable to a mold infestation.

    2. Provide adequate ventilation

Apart from a dehumidifier, you should also look into improving your ventilation system. Start by installing attic fans and  vent fans in your bathroom. These are great for drawing out humid air especially in places that are always wet. Another way you can provide your home with adequate ventilation is to open the windows and draw up the blinds. Letting in fresh air helps control the temperature and creates an environment that prevents mold.

    3. Dry spills and stains immediately

Whenever you encounter or cause a spill, dry it out completely. Waiting a long time to soak up the mess will only give mold a chance to grow. Make it a habit to take a mop or rag and wipe away any liquid, especially if you have floors made of hardwood. Consider using a microfiber cloth along with a disinfectant spray made from HOCl to eliminate mold spores and make your surfaces sparkle.

    4. Fix any broken pipes, taps, and other component

Leaky pipes can cause considerable water damage, but the real danger is the mold that often grows in places where water drips. Consider checking your plumbing for any damages or leaks and sealing these up completely. You may also check your faucets and make sure these are properly assembled. Do the same with downspouts and drainage systems such as gutters. Repairing these water fixtures immediately helps control mold on top of preventing water damage.

    5. Talk to an expert

In case you are already facing a serious mold problem already, you can always look for a contractor like Florida’s Mold Masters that specializes with getting rid of and preventing mold infestations. For this, opt for an EPA-certified company that can do everything, from monitoring indoor air quality to disinfecting areas of infestation. Make sure to ask for their rates and see if you can have them visit your home under a recurring arrangement. You may want to ask for their advice for how you can make your home mold-proof.

Mold is a serious issue when it comes to your health, so it’s always important to control this problem before it even begins to take shape.
