To say that the no scalpel vasectomy is painless would be untrue, but the majority of patients report discomfort rather than pain. This is down to the modern technique which is used by the surgeon and it is one of the main reasons why researchers looked into a way of completing the vasectomy without a scalpel. The original operation caused pain and so required heavier sedation, now light anesthesia is used on the patient so that they have a far easier process during their time in the operating room.
