Just Engaged? Here Are 6 Things You Need to Do First

First of all, congratulations! You’re engaged! Whether it was a total surprise or a moment you’d been hinting at for months, it’s official. You’ve found your person, you’ve got the ring, and the journey toward your wedding day has begun.

Before the whirlwind of wedding planning sweeps you off your feet, here are six essential things to do as soon as you get engaged. Think of this as your soft launch into planning mode. No pressure, just some helpful steps to get you started on the right foot.

    1. Soak It All In (and Celebrate!)

You don’t need to have a venue booked or a colour scheme picked within the first week. Take time to savour this moment. Share the news with your family and closest friends, whether it’s through phone calls, a fun video call, or a casual gathering.

Pop some bubbly, take lots of photos, and enjoy being newly engaged. This is one of those rare life moments that deserves to be celebrated just as it is, without a to-do list.

    2. Get Your Ring Insured

It’s not glamorous, but it is smart. Your engagement ring is not only valuable, it’s sentimental, so make sure it’s protected. Look into adding it to your existing home or renters’ insurance policy, or explore specialist jewellery insurance options. Some companies even offer policies that cover accidental loss or damage anywhere in the world. The sooner you do this, the better you’ll feel wearing it out and about.

    3. Talk Budget and Priorities

Once the excitement starts to settle, it’s time for a loving and open conversation about your wedding budget. This will influence almost every planning decision, so it’s good to get on the same page early.

Discuss how much you’re both comfortable spending, whether anyone else is contributing, and what your top priorities are. Is it the venue? The food? The photography? Knowing what matters most to you both will help shape your dream day.

    4. Draft a Guest List

Even a rough draft will help steer your planning. Your venue size, catering budget, and even your wedding date might depend on how many people you’re inviting.

Start with your must-haves, like immediate family, best friends, and loved ones you couldn’t imagine the day without. Then gradually work outward to extended family, plus-ones, and colleagues. Remember, this is just a first version and you can always trim it later.

    5. Pick a Season or General Timeframe

You don’t need to land on a specific date right away, but choosing a general timeframe, like spring next year or late autumn, will help with venue availability and supplier bookings.

Consider what season feels right for you both, and factor in things like weather, travel schedules, and your personal energy levels. Summer weddings can be gorgeous, but they can also be hot and pricey. A spring or autumn wedding might offer more flexibility and comfort, depending on your location.

    6. Create a Wedding Planning Hub

You’re going to be juggling lots of moving parts over the coming months, so staying organised is key. Start a shared space where you can track ideas, budgets, and bookings. Whether that’s a physical binder, a Google Drive folder, or a wedding planning app, it’ll make the process smoother and save you from digging through old texts to remember which florist you liked.

If you’re going digital, look for a planning app that includes a custom checklist, RSVP tracking, and design tools for things like save-the-dates and invitations. Some even let you create your own garden-vibes digital wedding invitation to set the tone from the very beginning.

Getting engaged is a beautiful moment. Don’t let the pressure to plan everything immediately take away from it. These first steps are all about setting a solid foundation, so you can enjoy the planning journey ahead without feeling overwhelmed.

Take it slow, lean on your support system, and most of all, keep the focus on what matters most: celebrating your love in a way that feels true to you.
