Steven Kazmierczak, at 27, looked like an average schoolboy – except that his arms were covered with disturbing images, including a doll from the horror movie Saw. Professors and students knew him as a bright, helpful scholar, but his past included a stint in a mental health centre. Kazmierczak allegedly had three tattoos done in recent months – one a skull being stabbed with a knife and another of the Saw character.

Kazmierczak had a history of mental illness; his behavior had become erratic recently after he stopped taking his medication, said Donald Grady, the university Police Chief. A former employee at the Thresholds-Mary Hill House (psychiatric center) stated that Kazmierczak used to cut himself, and was once a patient there.

Kazmierczak had purchased weapons legally from a Champaign gun store – a Remington shotgun, Glock 9mm, Hi-Point .380, and a Sig Sauer. He had no criminal record, so a background check had cleared. Kazmierczak also had a state firearms owners identification card.

[...] And then we heard that Baty hasn’t exactly been cooperating with the investigation, though police have two packages she received from Kazmierczak. She provided police with information that her boyfriend had been acting “erractically” before the shooting, information she contradicted in an interview with CNN. His behavior seems to confirm her original assertion; we have heard he had become inexplicably secretive with his computer, had gained an interest in guns in recent years, and had a Champaign artist recently design and complete several disturbing tattoos.
