Frozen Iguanas in Suspended Animation

Ugh, I had a rough day!

If you live in South Florida, don’t be alarmed if frozen iguanas start dropping from trees. It’s not a page out of Revelations or anything like that – it’s just the cold snap Florida is going through, which can give plants and animals a rough time.

How bad is the Florida cold snap? Well, there were reports of snow flurries along the I-4 corridor, although we never saw any, which bums us out.

Anyway, as the Miami Herald points out, the iguana is an invasive species that people buy from pet stores and then release into the wild (idiots).

When temperatures plunge into the 30s, iguanas become catatonic, falling from trees and littering walkways in a state of suspended animation. When the weather warms, they reanimate, although sometimes worse for wear.

The video at the Miami Herald site says to do the following when you find an iguana on the ground, not moving:

  • Put a towel in the dryer for a few minutes and then wrap the iguana in it
  • Keep the iguana in a contained area, wrapped in the towel, like a garage or even your bathroom
  • Wait for the weather to get warmer before releasing the iguana, even if it starts moving around
