Chongqing, China has a population of about 31 million people. That’s a lot of people that need to use the bathroom, and you don’t want there to be too few bathrooms with population density like that. That’s why they made a public area with more than 1,000 toilets spread out over 30,000 square feet.

The city of Chongqing recently opened a giant public area with an Egyptian facade, soothing music, and more than 1,000 toilets spread out over 30,000 square feet. City officials are going to ask Guinness to list the free public bathroom (four stories high) as the world’s largest restroom.

“We are spreading toilet culture. People can listen to gentle music and watch TV,” said Lu Xiaoqing, an official with the Yangrenjie, or “Foreigners Street,” tourist area where the bathroom is. “After they use the bathroom they will be very, very happy.”

Some urinals are uniquely shaped, including ones inside open crocodile mouths and several done up in the likeness of the Virgin Mary.
