Figure Skater Johnny Weir Threatened Over Fur

U.S. figure skater Johnny Weir had plans to stay at a Vancouver hotel for the Olympics, but since he’s been getting threats from some anti-fur activists he has changed his venue. He now shares a suite with U.S. ice dancer Tanith Belbin in the Olympic village.

“I felt very threatened. I’m not allowed to say how everything got through, but my agent got letters and faxes and e-mails. I got letters at the ice rink, somebody found my phone number. All these crazy fur people. Security-wise, to stay in a hotel would be very difficult. There have been threats against me. I didn’t want to get hurt. It’s a very scary thing. I’m a figure skater, I’m not some huge politician who gets these things all the time.”

Forced to “rough it”, Weir states: “I don’t want any outside influences to hurt my chances here. Even though I’m not always comfortable rooming with somebody or being in a communal village sort of situation, it’s what I’ve got to deal with.” Added Weir: “People are nuts.”
