Bubble Skin Man – Chandra Wisnu

posted by Chris Valentine

Right around the time he was getting married to his wife over 30 years ago, an Indonesian man named Chandra Wisnu started noticing weird bumps on his back resembling little bubbles. He started getting more of them, until one day they covered his entire body. From then on, the residents of Chandra Wisnu’s village referred to him as the Bubble Skin Man. It is only just within the last year that, after 25 years of trying to figure out the cause of his condition, the bubble skin man was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis type I, a disease that causes non-cancerous tumors to appear all over his body.

The condition, caused by a gene defect, affects up to one in 2500 people. (It is speculated that the Elephant Man – Joseph Merrick – had suffered from a combination of neurofibromatosis type I and Proteus syndrome). Chandra Wisnu, now 57 years old, has been trying to find a cure/explanation for his bubble-skin for years, only to finally get an answer from dermatologist Anthony Gaspari, from Maryland. Gaspari said there are treatments are available but unfortunately no cure for NF-1 exists.

Said Wisnu:

“I try to keep busy and then I can forget about it. When people stare at me, I tell myself, it’s because I am good looking. I always try to look on the bright side.”
