The Zapatero Goth Daughters From Spain!

The Spanish prime minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, has two daughters, and Spanish law allows him to forbid any printing of their photos anywhere. Here’s a family photo that he failed to stop from getting out – it’s a photograph of Zapatero, his two daughters Laura, 16, and Alba, 13, Barack Obama and Michelle Obama. We’re not sure who the blonde on the left is (his wife, we assume).

It did not occur to him that official Obama pictures – taken at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York where the Obamas were hosting a dinner – are uploaded on to the US state department’s Flickr page, or that the black clothes and calf-high boots worn by one of his offspring might brighten the lives of Spain’s adolescent goths. Yesterday his office was scrambling to remove all traces of the snaps, alleging that – unlike the Obamas – Zapatero has always kept his daughters out of the public eye. Officials also persuaded the state-owned Spanish news agency EFE not to distribute photographs of the two girls at the UN.

A few surprises:

Says 24 year old Meghan McCain:

I can’t believe there is a country that exists where the media protects children of public figures, let alone the prime minister’s daughters. It is literally hard for me to fathom that there is a place that respects the privacy of underage children of politicians and diplomats. The second part of this that makes me very sad is that these two girls are enduring a sort of baptism by fire with the media scrutiny that surrounds their family portrait with the Obamas.
… lest I remind everyone that Twilight and vampires are huge right now, especially for teenagers. I don’t know why the prime minister’s daughters chose to express themselves through Goth attire and quite frankly I don’t care. They are teenagers expressing themselves, and clearly the prime minister and his wife had no problem with them dressing in their Goth attire to meet the president. So why should we?
…No one knows better than me that being the child of a politician is not a gig you choose but are born into. How about giving these kids a break as they grow up in the spotlight?
