Agga Wandha, the Burmese Monk is correct in regards to the style of Buddhism he practices, Theravadan ("The Way of the Elders"), an ascetic sect. It is not true when applied to Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism ("The Wide Path"), the sect which Singa Rinpoche represents. Mahayana Buddhists take the current conditions they find themsleves in, and try to transform it to remove suffering, and encourage Enlightenment. Singa is a priest who is bringing the ancient chants to the youth, and broadcasting powerful aspiration prayers of health and happiness to the world. Surely he does not deserve censure!

Enlightenment is sexy, apparently. Rrrrrowr!

Agga Wandha, a 59-year-old Burmese monk in Taipei, agreed. “The essence of Buddhism is to quench desires in order to achieve inner peace. Singa Rinpoche’s wearing fashionable clothes and driving fancy cars shows he is feeding these desires. He is really in a mess,” he said. But Singa Rinpoche’s behavior is nothing new to Tibetan Buddhism. Three hundred years ago, the sixth Dalai Lama raised eyebrows because he frequented Lhasa’s red light district at night and wrote love poems.

And the current Dalai Lama once killed a bird because he got pissed off. And he eats meat. Big flippin' deal.
