Reviews of the commercials from the first half of Super Bowl XLI

Sierra Mist – Beard Comb Over

Sprite – The fat guy with the comb over and the Daisy Dukes (was that pitched as being “intrinsically funny?” Coz it’s not.), and the inane dojo spot. Did they intentionally set out to film a non sequitur , or were they just simply uninspired? What agency did these? Have them all shot. [Edit: Someone just pointed out to me that those ads were actually for Sierra Mist, not Sprite. Heh. I guess they sucked so bad I didn't even remember what product they were advertising. (Or perhaps that was intentional, and it was intended that I associate them with their rival's products. In which, I guess those ads were actually brilliant)].

SalesGenie.com

More appropriate for UHF (or blast faxes!) than the Super Bowl, SalesGenie comes off as being as desperate as the Glengarry Glen Ross characters they channel in this milquetoast spot –they probably blew so much of their venture capital on Super Bowl time that they could only afford an agency that generally does mid-market radio spots for mattress warehouses and Hyundai dealerships. But it’s probably SalesGenie that will gain the most from their Super Bowl spot. Had you ever heard of SalesGenie before? Did you know what kind of service they provided? Neither did 90 million other people, and now they do. Mission accomplished.

Snickers – Accidental Kiss

Two guys accidentally kiss while working on a car and chomping down on opposite ends of a Snickers bar. A+++++ edgy, funny, ground breaking. Snickers just made Super Bowl ad history.

Chevy – Love Chevy

People of all different demographics driving or doting over their cars, singing off-key renditions of popular songs of all genres that were written about those cars. Why didn’t someone think of this sooner? Awesome.

Budweiser – Auctioneer at the wedding

Yawn.
